What to Pack for a Day at Hahei Beach (and the Cathedral Cove Walk)

We're the beach shop in Hahei village, right on the way to the Cathedral Cove carpark. We watch people arrive at the beach every day — and we see the same mistakes over and over. People underestimate the NZ sun. They underpack on shade. They overpack on things they don't need.

This is our honest list of what actually matters for a day at Hahei Beach or the Cathedral Cove walk. We stock all of it, but this isn't a sales pitch — it's what we'd tell a friend.

The non-negotiables

SPF 50+ sunscreen

New Zealand has some of the highest UV levels in the world — significantly higher than equivalent latitudes in Europe or North America. At Hahei on a clear summer day, you can burn in under 15 minutes without protection. Bring SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen, apply it before you leave the car, and reapply every two hours. If you're swimming, reapply as soon as you get out. This is the one thing people most often wish they'd brought more of.

A good beach towel

Not a bathroom towel from the bach. A proper sand-resistant or quick-dry beach towel is worth it — it dries fast, doesn't hold sand, and doubles as a wrap if the wind picks up in the afternoon. Hahei can get breezy later in the day, especially in February and March.

A hat and sunglasses

Wide-brimmed for real UV protection. A cap is better than nothing but leaves your ears and neck exposed. UV-rated sunglasses matter more than people think — reflected glare off the water adds up over a long day.

Drinking water

There's a cafe at Hahei Beach and a shop in the village, but the Cathedral Cove walk is 35–40 minutes each way with no water on the track. Bring more than you think you need, especially with kids.

What makes a long beach day much better

Shade

A beach umbrella or pop-up beach tent changes everything. Hahei Beach is mostly open and exposed to the sun — there's minimal natural shade once you're on the sand. If you're spending more than a couple of hours, having your own shade means you can actually stay all day instead of retreating by midday. Beach umbrellas are one of the things people most often come into the shop looking for after arriving underprepared.

A proper beach bag

Something that can hold wet towels, sandy toys, sunscreen bottles and doesn't collapse. A mesh tote or a structured beach bag with a wet pocket makes the walk back to the car a lot easier.

Snacks

The cafe at Hahei is good, but it gets busy on peak summer days. Pack fruit, crackers, something substantial if you're doing the Cathedral Cove walk and the beach after. Hungry kids at 2pm on a hot day is not the vibe.

For the Cathedral Cove walk specifically

Cathedral Cove is car-free — you walk (35–40 minutes from the carpark on Grange Road), kayak, or take the ferry from Hahei Beach. The walk is well-formed but has steps and exposed sections, so:

• Wear comfortable shoes. Jandals for the beach are fine but not ideal for the track.
• Carry everything you need for the beach at the bottom — there's nothing once you're there.
• Bring a change of clothes if you're swimming. The walk back in wet togs in the afternoon wind is cold.
• The arch itself is spectacular. Worth going at low tide if you can — the cave is accessible.

Kids at Hahei Beach

Hahei is genuinely one of the best family beaches on the Coromandel. The water is calm, warm and clear in summer. A few extras that make a real difference with kids:

• A UV rashie or sun suit — much easier than chasing kids with sunscreen every two hours
• Water shoes — the rock shelves at the south end of the beach are worth exploring
• Sand toys — a bucket and spade, a boogie board, or something to build with
• A beach tent for nap time if you have little ones

What you can leave at home

A paddleboard (you can hire them in Hahei). A cooler bag unless you're staying all day — the beach walk makes them annoying. More than one beach bag. Anything you'd be upset to lose to sand or seawater.
