    Frequently Asked Questions

What does the MGO rating on mānuka honey mean?

MGO (methylglyoxal) is the naturally occurring compound that gives mānuka honey its distinctive properties, and its concentration is what determines the grade. A higher MGO number means a higher concentration and a more potent, intensely flavoured honey. All our honey is lab tested to verify the MGO rating on the label.

Is raw and unpasteurised honey safe to eat?

Yes. Raw, unpasteurised honey simply hasn't been heat-treated, so its natural enzymes, pollen and flavour stay intact. It's how honey has been eaten for thousands of years, and it's safe for most people — the only exception is children under 12 months old, for whom any honey isn't recommended due to the small risk of infant botulism.

Why has my honey crystallised, and is it still good?

Crystallisation is completely natural, especially in raw honey — it's a sign your honey hasn't been over-processed, not a sign it's gone off. If you prefer it runny, sit the jar in a bowl of warm (not boiling) water until it softens.

How much mānuka honey should I take, and when?

There's no strict rule — many people take a spoonful straight, stir it into warm water or lemon, or use it on toast. For a daily wellness routine, a teaspoon or two is a common amount.

Can babies or pregnant women eat mānuka honey?

Honey of any kind — including mānuka — should not be given to children under 12 months old, due to a small risk of infant botulism. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any health concerns, it's best to check with your healthcare provider before adding mānuka honey to your routine.

How should I store my honey?

Keep it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight — there's no need to refrigerate it. Stored this way, raw honey lasts a very long time thanks to its natural low moisture and acidity.
